Chay river is one of tributaries of Son river forming from thick limestones in Phong Nha – Ke Bang. It has the length of 10km but Chay river brings its magnificent cliffs and biodiversity including aquatic animals featured for Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park that are Giant mottled eel and Clupanodon thrissa listed in the World Redlist. Currently, the Phong Nha – Ke Bang tourism centre has listed the Zipline service to serve the adventure guests. From the Animal protection tower, guests will get zipline passing Chay river to come to Dark Cave. The feeling of flying high, seeing Chay river with jade water could not be described.

The Dark cave’s entrance was connected with Chay river and hidden behind an old tree. Being one of cave branches in Phong Nha, Dark cave was featured for the geology formation 400 – 500 million years ago and was early discovered by local people. During the American war, Dark cave was used as the place to avoid the bombs. In 1992, the British Cave Research Association came and researched the whole cave and revealed that its length of 5.258m, height of 80m. The view has been still wild with thousands of slatactite columns having diverse, special shapes. Passing through the gate, travelers will see a pyramid 30m height and 10m width, see the stalagmite shaped like a bell

Keep going some steeps to see other stalagmite shaped a turtle that was known as the Golden Turtle God. Getting inside more, travelers will see much more stalagmite and stalactite.

According to scientists, those stalagmites and stalactites are the relics of geology motion. The stalactite that has been stained is the old one and very slowly developes. Besides, inside the dark cave has lakes with many fish. In 1995, a russian scientist L.Deharveng discovered a kind of crab named Nemoron nomas and the sample has been kept at the animal museum belonged to Zoology of Singapore National University

Dark cave is also the place for animals to live such as : bats, birds….., especially, Ha Tinh langur is one of rare animal belonged to Primate listed in Vietnam Redbook and only exists in Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park

Going inside the cave, head-light shine is like the darkness swallowed making guests feel nervous. At between of the cave, guests will be surprised with the mud and enjoy them. That kind of mud makes skin become more beautiful. After 30 min, travelers turn back and kayak boat on Chay river. It is the time to have bath with games on Chay river “small zipline”…..

Dark cave and Chay river is a tourism product managed by Phong Nha Ke Bang Management Centre that is taken to exploit in order to be diverse for tourism, reduce guest rates from Phong Nha Cave and Tien Son cave, attract more and more guests coming to Quang Binh.

Dark cave – Chay river has launched and connected other destination in Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park becoming as a closed tour with route : Phong Nha cave – Tien Son cave – Dark cave – the Nuoc Mooc Spring Ecotrail – Paradise cave – Eight-lady cave and the General Memorial Monument for soldier of Victory Road 20.
